Working as an interior designer is not easy. You need to know how to decorate rooms in different styles, understand the needs of your clients and be creative enough in order for your designs not to look monotonous.

If you are one of those who are planning on becoming an interior designer or currently working as one, below are some tips that will help you during your career.

Learn more about color theory

Designing interiors is not just about choosing colors that go well together. It’s also about understanding the power of color . You need to know how different shades can affect human emotions and behavior, what impression they may give when combined, which colors tend to clash with others, etc. So make sure you read up on some basics of color theory in order for you to avoid many problems in the future.

Work with an interior designer or architect

As mentioned previously, designing interiors isn’t easy. There are times wherein even experienced designers who claim that they already know everything find themselves at a loss once they encounter certain problems. And when this happens, it would be helpful if there’s someone who could help you out. If you’re looking for a designer to work with, check online or ask friends and family for recommendations. You may also want to consider hiring an architect or interior designer who is experienced in dealing with design projects similar to yours.

Assign one room at a time

Many people tend to think that they can handle more than what they can actually do alone. However, many fail their projects simply because of this reason. That’s why it will be helpful if you focus on one room before moving on to the next . For example, when designing your living room, make sure you know exactly how it would look once everything is done (if painting your house, make sure all coats are dried; etc.). The same goes for other rooms as well. This way, you will know exactly what needs to be done and accomplish it in a timely manner.

Know the difference between decorating and designing

Do not confuse these two terms. While they might sound similar, decorating refers to placing or arranging things such as furniture and accessories inside your home while designing means creating an interior (usually on a smaller scale) that is visually appealing . If you’re trying to design your home but keep on doing more decorating work, then perhaps you should consider differentiating these two terms more often.

Invest on quality materials

If you have a small budget for your project, then it would be helpful if you spend more on the things that are essential. No matter how much you’re willing to spend on paint, furniture, fabrics, etc., just remember that good design starts with good materials . So instead of buying ten cheap yet poorly-made chairs, buy one expensive but durable chair instead. You may even want to look into some designs made from reclaimed wood or recycled metal in order to save money without having to settle for poor quality.

Interior design is not an easy career. It requires a lot of hard work plus creativity and other essential skills. If you are passionate about this field, make sure you know all the things mentioned above so that you can start your career on the right foot.
